Get ready for the new digital, shorter SAT exam

The new SAT exam will be going fully digital, plus it will be one hour shorter to complete.

That was the big news from the College Board as it prepares to transition to a digital SAT at international test centers in 2023, and at U.S. schools in 2024.

So if you’re a student in the class of 2024 testing internationally, you will be the first to take the digital SAT. While if you live in the U.S., students in the high school class of 2025 will be the first class to take the digital exam.

Instead of the paper and pencil needed to complete the test, students will be taking the SAT on a laptop or tablet, using a custom-built digital exam application that can be downloaded in advance of the day of the test.

In addition to the test going digital, the new exam will be shorter than the current test, taking around two hours instead of three currently. The test will include two sections (Reading and Writing, Math) with a break in between.

What will remain the same, according to the College Board, is that the test will still “continue to measure the knowledge and skills that students are learning in school and that matter most for college and career readiness.”

The test will still be scored on the same 1,600 scale, and the digital SAT will still be administered in a school or in a test center with a proctor present.

As more information becomes available on what the test will actually look like, Full Score Education will be able to help prepare students for the new exam.
